Fervent defender of the grime sound, a mainstream electro trend from over the Channel marked by strong reminiscences of Breaks and D&B, Ian Miley (Audio Illusion / SMB / Fdb) is invited on London based structure Rag & Bone to deliver a tended "Weedgrinder EP"! In four vigorous titles, half of Leyton Breakers (whose other member is none other than Controlled Weirdness) signs a diabolic 12'' in which chopped bass and post industrial sounds amalgamate with wonder. A side begins with the mutant "Teak-Tech", a piece of breaky with nasty tribal loops. In the same vein, "Wax One Wax Off" serves an apocalyptic slaughter made of dark and sinister strings over an energetic bassline. "Failed Systems" on the reverse offers an admirable production where UK artist's 90's rave influences re-appear. Finally "Fire At Will" wants to be the perfect example of the grime sound: devastating old school influences, unrestrained D'n'B rhythm and a strong propensity to exaggerate in the infrabasses. A fearsome EP which will not have any trouble to find a place in your more dancefloor sets. www.ragandbonerecords.co.uk Nexus 6, 10/12/2004
