Chris Liebing – U60311 Compilation / Techno Division Vol.4 – V2 Rec

After DJ Rush and Carl Cox who compiled and mixed Techno Division Vol.2 & Vol.3 respectively, it is time for Chris Liebing to mix for this series for one more time (C.L compiled and mixed Techno Division Vol.1 back in 1999). U60311's fourth volume consists of two mixed CDs (Red and Blue) full of techno... Red CD includes tracks from: Ricardo Villalobos, 2Dollar Egg, Oliver Hacke, Matthew Dear, Lucien-n-Luciano, Speedy J and Literon, Josh Wink, Nutmeg, Agoria and more. It is a quite minimalistic mix with some housey elements and a fantastic build up!!! On the Blue CD things are getting "serious"; tunes from Marco Bailey, Mauro Picotto, Hardcell, DK8, Tim Xavier, Hertz, C.J. Bolland and many more artists form a much harder and faster atmosphere aiming at a much different audience. Highlight of the Blue CD is Phil Kieran's mix on Nitzer Ebb's "Murderous"... wow!!! Overall this is a very good release with the Red CD gaining most of my attention. However, the superb mixing and compilation of tracks on both CDs proves once more why Chris Liebing won the "best national DJ" award on the 2003 German Dance Music Awards.

The first CD of this compilation is dedicated to music which we wouldn't expect from Chris, style wise. Interestingly, it's click house with artists such as 2 Dollar Egg, Luciano, Oliver Hacke, Nutmeg, R. Villalobos, Matthew Dear, etc. The selection of tracks is deep and dark at some moments, music suitable primarily for home listening - a welcome surprise. The second CD is much more like him. M. Bailey, Hardcell, DK8, Nitzer Ebb, Patrick Skoog, Secret Cinema, Hertz, Speedy J & Literon, CJ Bolland, Martyn Hare... & himself. It's not what can be expected of Chris playing at a party, it's more suited for listening although it's pumping techno. After all, it's a compilation. Anyway, a nice selection of tracks for both listening and dancing pleasure. What's interesting is that Chris used his usual setup when DJing, using a lot of effectors, samplers, FinalScratch, Ableton Live and God-knows-what-else, but it isn't that much obvious in the mix. I know this compilation is meant to be in connection with U60311, but if you want the real thing, go and visit the club!
