Released in last March, this album deserves to be mentioned in our pages because this young producer is really promising. With 14 titles, Alex Smoke shows he's very talented in minimal house / techno as well as in more electro or ambient styles. We find on " Incommunicado" analog sounds (basslines & rhythms), more traditional sounds (guitar, piano, chords), many synth strings, frightening or deep atmospheres + some vocal parts and everything is perfectly mixed and finely-worked. A new label is just born in Geneva: Num Records freshly launched by Philippe Quenum (half of Access 58 with already about 50 releases out!) and Lee Van Dowski (Mental Groove, Anti-iiism, Cadenza). This first EP is made of two groovy longplayers that are based on rhythmic microsamples: the first one is marked by a strong dark bass and the second one gives the impression that Mathew Jonson has been invited at half of the track. Excellent!! Something funny to note, on the promosheet are printed waveforms of the two tracks with some comments about their components (enlarge image). Check it!!
